Now part of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), Loewe was founded by leather craftsmen in Madrid over 175 years ago. Throughout the years, the brand has won its share of prominent advocates including legends such as Ernest Hemingway, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich, and Sophia Loren.
While not everything has remained the same for almost 200 years – the house has changed ownership and expanded into complementary categories like perfumes and fashion – the brand has never strayed from its commitment to artistry. In fact, current creative director Jonathan Anderson has declared that, “Craft is the essence of LOEWE… This is where our modernity lies, and it will always be relevant.”
A couple of fun facts: The brand’s signature logo, which first appeared in the 1970s, was designed by none other than Karl Lagerfeld. And as for the name Loewe, you’re correct in guessing that it’s not Spanish. It was actually bestowed on the brand about 30 years into its existence by a German leather maker who came to Spain to join forces with the group.
